It was always easier to just drill the deep pockets because to extract the oil from dirt is not easy or efficient until new technology came along.

Its a shame in todays day and age we still burn oil though.
It could still be used for many other things. heck the creamer in your coffee is mostly oil.

I believe you except about the cream..... I drink my coffee black, so no oil there
