It is a part that wears, so if never done, will likely offer an improvement.

The main failure modes of this type of MAF are
a) Hot wire gets too thin, system becomes out of calibration and engine doesn't run correctly. Since this is a very slow process, you as the driver don't notice any big change but slowly things just aren't right.
b) Circuit goes into thermal run-away - causes no run situation - sometimes no start but other times it will start but will not run long.
