What is the fault?

I have done a couple of repairs to mine for the electric trace board and replacing the AC compressor switch.

"I've been told the control head is not repairable."

By whom? You may be putting too much faith is someone who doesn't know...

I would suggest that you actually tell us the symptoms, in great detail - someone here might have been down this road before.

I was told by Roger Tyson from, 928 R Us that the Hvac unit could possibly be refurbished depending on what was wrong with it. The AC blows cold air out the vents and the fan speed works but the Hvac control levers do not work. I have a close friend who owns a service center and also is familiar with Porsche's. He pulled the unit and he told me that there is actually broken pieces (I'm assuming he means the control levers). Anyway, he couldn't fix it and re installed the unit. The fall out was, the AC compressor is not kicking in so he probably missed a connection. I have the 928 down at another company called Classic Restorations in Denver. The owner is also a close friend. His company does total restorations on blue chip cars. They do fantastic work. His AC Technician is going to take a shot at it. I have a copy of the shop manual on DVD which I gave them. By the way, they also did an off wheel detail on the car including refinishing the wheels. The car looks brand new. If you have any ideas please let me know. On a side note. I am a Zone manager for General Motors. I've been with GM for over 31 years. I also have a ZR-1 Corvette and a 87 Buick Grand National. I love cars and have always wanted a, 928.
Thanks

Well, I had an AC specialist look at the 928. He thinks the Hvac unit is okay. There isn't enough volts getting to the AC compressor to kick it in. I also found out that my Aux cooling fan is not working. I ordered another one and once we have that installed he should be able to get to the root cause and get my AC issue resolved. I also took the opportunity to replace the hood installation pad since the car is sitting. When I'm done with this thing it's going to be show condition. I'm still going to drive it though. Only on nice days of course.

What has failed with the AC controller? My '79 928 AC wasn't working correctly and we found
a) temp slider mount anchor broke ... no easy fix, so I disconnected it and adjust it by hand (lever down by the gas pedal).

b) vacuum tubes not mounted correctly. I located the correct placement and properly connected the tubes, everything works.
