So I'm new here and to 928's. I'm just about to trade my Expedition 97' for a 79' 928 that is currently not road worthy... I know, it sounds stupid, if it means anything I'm 21 so I guess stupid and rash shouldn't be surprising. I've been looking for a new car and trying to sell my Expedition, I've been looking for a bit of a project, though it would be a daily driver. After scores of rx-7's, Supras, 240sx's, etc... I looked at porsche(mostly due to boredom) on my local classifieds with a price max at $5k, and low and behold, with a bunch of 944 and a few 911 chassis there were two 928. One was in really bad shape the other had a bit more reserved description. So I called the man up and pitched a trade, he figured why not and last week he was in my area so he checked my car out, this weekend I got to go see the 928.
So since the owner wasn't there and the man showing me the car didn't have the keys I did't get to try and start it or see if any of the electrical was working, but it was unlocked so I got to have a good look over.
So to sum it up, it has a cooling problem such that it over heats in about two hours left idling(as has been explained to me), the clutch is not disengaging(something appears to be wrong with the master/slave cylinder), the leather on the dash is a complete goner, it's been sitting for about two years(having been turned on about every month or two), no radio and a few speakers are missing, the whole interior is musky/moldy, needs new paint, roof has surface rust where paint has peeled(not bubbly, paint just peeled up and thin rust on the metal), has a rear wing, spoiler and body kit on the rear clearly not belonging to the 79'...(guess someone thought it needed more looks), a spot of rust under the drivers side rear window, and the antenna is snapped. I think I got it all.
Good things are; the seats are in incredible condition(front and rear), all stock wheels with emblems, only 54k miles, doesn't look like much has been messed with under the hood, according to the guy all is working fine electrically(seats, headlights, wipers, etc...).
I know this will be a project, keep in mind I don't need to get it done professionally immediately, I can pass with speaker carpeting on the dash, primed only spots on the body, and over all tackiness with details as long as I can get it running and operating smoothly(mechanics takes priority). Then as time and money are available i can go through the finer details, like a well done paint job and upholstery.
I'm fairly mechanically savvy and have a good place and source of tools to work with. I'm looking for general advice and resources, anything will probably be of great help. I've already gotten quite a bit of useful information from here and it seems you all know your 928's.
