The white dot/led will be part of an aftermarket security system. It is most likely that the primary function will be to drain the battery so quickly that any thief would soon return the car in frustration...
Pull the carpeted side panels off the console and you should be able to work out how to pull the radio.
Porsche offer a digital nav/radio as part of their classic parts scheme, but they don't fit the '78-'83 console. I found a radio delete in South Africa that i'm going to use to install a period shaft mount radio as was done in the 1980's by Porsche dealers.
Having now seen one, any competent trim shop would find it pretty easy to make one up..
