This is why I asked whether the interior lights worked as they should if the hatch was opened. If so, then you can bet on a bad relay.

i installed a new relay XX4 and non working lights worked again, came on when door was opened. about 1 hr. later i took car for ride and lights came on and stayed on, wouldn't turm off. my new relay was used from 928 international could it have been bad? what can i do with problem. 1988 S4. thanks, john

Take the relay out and tap it on the flood or bench.
Put it back in and see if it works any different. If it does its the relay.
Also you can try one from another spot that looks the same, just to see if it is the relay or a different problem.
