Tires and Cold Weather

Those of us who can drive our cars in the winter need to remember:
- It is time to check the tire pressures on all of our vehicles - they will be low.
- If your 928 has high-performance tires, you need to know that they have much lower traction below fifty degrees F, and are hockey pucks below freezing. Drive cautiously until the tires warm up. They are almost unusable in snow or ice.

The 928 can be an excellent winter car - but only with all-weather or snow tires.

All season tires on mine, but it won't see much snow

My GTS came from Cali. I had a low tire last January on one of my rear Sumitomos and aired it up. It was actually below freezing when I did. On the way to the GTG breakfast, the inner sidewall separated and I had huge "bubbles" on the inside of the tire. I made it to the GTG and help that was there. I had to borrow a wheel and tire to get home.

I was gonna complain to Sumitomo, but after I looked at the website for these tires in detail, there was a note that these tires are not meant to be driven in below freezing weather. I couldn't very well complain since it was below freezing. Apparently, this was one of the first times that the car had been in below freezing temps.

All I'm saying here is check your tires and make sure that you know what you're driving on. I love these tires in the Summer, but they can't be relied on in the winter.

I dont drive my 928s in the winter which in this part of the world is a longtime but thats my decision.

I do drive my 4x4 truck in the winter and have spare wheels with winter tyres fitted for ice and snow grip. Up here all seasons dont cut it below 7C and we regularly have months where we dont get above zero.
In some Canadian cities full winter rubber is mandatory regardless of the vehicle driven.

Great minds think alike, well yours does anyway I just came in from the garage checking all 3 of my cars. The 928 was about 4-5 lbs low in each tire...

We had a DE about a month ago and the temps were significantly lower than what most were used to in the am. I think there were 6 or 7 wrecks where guys just started pushing their tires before they (and the track) were fully warm. Lots can happen with low/cold tires on cooler roads.

Also, your engine is going to LOVE the cooler air so it's going to respond differently to the throttle as well.
