Can I remove the cams and cylinder head and reinstall without the special tools?

yes...........with the crank at 45 degrees the cams will spin without valves hitting pistons so can be set at a position where they have the least amount of spring pressure. Just back off the cam holder bolts evenly and only a few turns at a time.........theres a Porsche workshop short movie in Jims CD collection.

As Malcolm already answered, yes you can. I only wanted to add that I think the videos he mentions can actually be viewed on YouTube.

Go to YouTube and enter "Porsche 928 engine training" in the search menu. I think that will pull up 3 videos. Each is about 10 minutes long if I remember correctly. The car they are using in the videos is an '86, however, they add notes where necessary for the '87+ cars. You should easily understand it. It is quite an interesting set of videos. They specifically show how to remove the cams and the heads, too. You may also learn quite a bit of other miscellaneous information you didn't already know about the 928 engine. I remember saying to myself a couple of times, "Hey, I didn't know that." :)
