Starting issue.. was created by aardvark
Hi folks ... Aardvark here.
I have a starting issue.. Starter cranks but when cranking, non power goes to the coil until I stop cranking.. thus the red time between the crank and run won't allow it to fire over.
We installed a bypass with a Toggle Switch so when the starter spins, it also runs power to the coil and the car runs..  In the run position there is coil power.

So. I've replaced the ICU , the starter relay (in fuse box) and the 2 ballast resistors, but the results are the same.

What is going on here?

I might add the car is a 1982

I would also take a hard look at the ignition switch.  Could be you have an issue there.

seriously the switch? It almost sounds too simple.
The car does start and run by jumping over with a toggle switch between the coil and top ballast resistor. I toggle it as I'm cranking the key/starter.

Is there any source for a wiring diagram of the circuit?

Not all solutions have to be complex :)

But, if the coil isn't getting power when in the key isn't in the start position but does in the run position then it stands to reason the key switch is a possible starting place.  They have been known to fail.

I do have the workshop manuals, so I'll take a look at that section and see what else is there..

Thank You Sir..
It makes sense..
I can't get to it for a few days but will look to see what it takes to pull out the tumbler from the dash.

Hello Aardvark,

I agree that the ignition switch is a good place to start.

I'll send you the 1982 928 wiring schematics from the workshop manual.  It may take some head scratching to figure out the way the early 928 schematics were drawn up.  Good news is all the information is there.   As admin I have your email address.
